Overview

MetaTrader 4 (MT4) remains the most recognised retail forex platform in the world. Two decades on it is showing its age against MT5 and TradingView, but its enormous library of EAs and custom indicators, and traders' sheer familiarity, keep many firms offering it. Best treated as a comfortable, forex-only option rather than a future-proof choice.

Best for

Forex traders with an existing MT4 EA or indicator toolkit.

Key features

  • The original MQL4 Expert Advisor ecosystem
  • Lightweight and runs on almost anything
  • Massive base of free indicators & scripts
  • Simple, familiar order entry

Pros

  • The largest legacy library of EAs & indicators
  • Extremely lightweight and stable
  • Familiar to most forex traders

Cons

  • Forex-only and no longer actively developed
  • Fewer timeframes and tools than MT5
  • Being phased out by some firms in favour of MT5

Verdict

MT4 is a proven, comfortable classic — but if you are starting fresh, prefer MT5 or TradingView. Choose MT4 mainly to keep using automation you already own.
